PERFORMANCE:
MIND-MOVING
02.12 - 09.12.23
Denis Bolborea (sound-design and performer) is a sound designer, dancer and choreographer with working experience in performing arts. In his personal artistic research, Denis is particularly concerned with the connection between voice and body. As a performer, he combines contemporary dance techniques with his urban dance experience. He develops in parallel as a vocal soloist and beatboxer, and engages in various projects where he places himself at the intersection of these roles, incorporating a live looping setup and vocal processors.
Since 2014 he has been part of the Tangaj Dance collective, coordinated by Simona Deaconescu, collaborating as a performer and/or sound-designer in various productions presented both in the country and in international festivals in cities such as Sofia, Linz, Istanbul, New York.
In 2016, he started together with Alexandra Bălășoiu the initiative Indie Box. Within it, Singing Bodies' Trilogy is born in 2018, a contemporary dance performance in three parts, or three independent solos, encapsulating the kinaesthetic and sensory experiences of three choreographers (Alexandra Bălășoiu, Denis Bolborea and Valentina de Piante) in relation to the city they live in. For most of the Indie Box projects, Denis has been producing and/or composing the sound-design. He is part of the acapella group Blue Noise, where he is filling the role of percussion. They have released their first album, entitled Portrait, under the Indie Box umbrella. In 2019 he collaborated with A-C Leonte in the development of "I am You" project, completed with an immersive concert, premiered at the Church of Florești, and in several cities in the country. Three music tracks (Pray, Remember and Running) were also released as part of the project.
Denis is currently in the process of developing BLIP (Beatbox and Looping International Platform), following the release of his first EP - "Out of the loop", as part of his personal project, KABLAT, produced 97% from voice and digital processing.
Paolo Profeti (musician and composer) graduated with honors at the Conservatory Giuseppe Verdi in Milano. He also received a diploma at the Accademia Internazionale della Musica directed by M. Enrico Intra and Franco Cerri. He studied further with great saxophone players such as Jesse Davis, Rosario Giuliani, Billy Harper, Orazio Maugeri and Mauro Negri.
Paolo has performed for several years in the Civica Jazz Band directed by Enrico Intra. He has collaborated with the Time Percussion, a project of Tony Arco, and the Contemporary Ensemble directed by Giovanni Falzone. He has performed with Daniele Cavallanti, Simone Daclon, Gianluca Di Ienno, Michele Franzini, Giulio Libano, Tito Mangialajo Rantzer, Catalin Milea, Sorin Romanescu, Fabrizio Spadea, Alberto Tacchini, Attilio Zanchi. He was the first alto for the Artchipel Orchestra, which won the prestigious award "TOP JAZZ 2012" as "Best Italian band of the year" held by the Musica Jazz magazine. With Artchipel Orchestra he has recorded the album Never Odd Or Even. He also plays with Mamud Band, an afro-funk ensemble founded in the 90's by percussionist Lorenzo Gasperoni alongside, most notably, Giovanni Venosta. As a member of Camilla Battaglia's To Book A Rest Quintet he was a finalist of the Barga Jazz Competition in 2012. He also composed the movie soundtrack for Primary Needs by Argentinian director Gabriel Pujia.
Stina Stjern made her debut to the music scene in 2009 with the now legendary seven inch «The Horizon». The first 100 copies came in hand-knitted covers, each one with a unique design, knitted by crafty women in Stinas hometown, Namsos. Meanwhile, Stina hung out in Brooklyn NYC, where she wrote her first album.
The album «Days Like Waves» was released in 2011, and is a musical self-examination on the longing to belong to something that you don’t yet know what it is. Indierockreviews wrote the following about the album: ”Her entire new album Days Like Waves is a lesson on how to write great pop music”.
Her new album, «Kap Herschell» was released in 2018, and is a musical dialogue between the young girl in a big city and the young hunter who travelled to the North-East of Greenland to live by himself as a huntsman. The young hunter was Stinas Grandfather.
The main tracks on «Kap Herschell» are recorded in Tim Gaine’s (Stereolab)studio in Berlin (Bloody Hair), with engineer Jeffrey Fisher. The tracks were later taken to producer Kyrre Laastad in his Trondheim-studio, Chrome Mahogany. Laastad picked the tracks apart, played them through old cassette tapes and synthesizers, and re-recorded them. The result sounds like a cross between 90’s lo-fi, shoegaze, and modern psychedelic pop music.
In 2015 Stina delivered the commissioned work, Stina Stjern vs. Motorpsycho for the festival Jazzfest (Trondheim, Norway). Here she arranged seven songs by the legendary Norwegian band Motorpsycho for an orchestra of 12 musicians. The project is now recorded and will be released in 2018.
Essential for Stina Stjerns artistry is her exploration of the complexity of human connections. In 2009 she arranged the modern dance act «Little Sister», with an ensemble of two professional dancers and a string orchestra with ten kids aged between ten to twelve. In 2014 she wrote the music piece «Dreambird» performed by «The Nicki Orchestra», an ensemble of musicians from Stina Stjerns band and students from Peder Morset folk college. A school which includes students with different grades of disabilities.

Do you think if you lived someone else's life your mind would work the same way?
Everything we experience throughout our life shapes our psychological and biological structures. Each individual develops in a complex web of stimuli and relationships, and the ability of the environment to support or stifle us, to feed us with fear or love, mostly defines our inner mechanisms.
mind-moving invites you to explore this profound question through a unique journey into the complexity of human experiences. The exhibition is built as a space for reflection and mirroring around universal states of being, which can be both normal responses to the surrounding reality as well as pathological adaptations to difficult life experiences.
The bodies of the performers follow dynamics inspired by mental disorders, but the audience is invited to forge their own path throughout this complex journey. The interactions we had with the patients we encountered in the partner psychiatric hospitals gave us the chance to engage in dialogue with people with remarkable life stories. We learned to see beyond labels and understand that anyone can end up on the path of mental frailty.
mind-moving is a call for empathy, understanding and destigmatization, transforming our view of mental health from one of labeling to one of exploring authentic human experiences. We challenge you to reflect on the impact of environment and community in shaping our minds, and discover how important artistic expression is in maintaining mental balance.
Indie Box is an initiative of the performers Alexandra Bălășoiu and Denis Bolborea who aim to create a series of projects aimed at increasing the degree of awareness and independence of the general public in relation to the preconceived models and ideas of contemporary society. A ‘box’ with independent projects, Indie Box operates in the field of contemporary performance. This is in direct connection with a wide range of fields including anthropology, architecture, urbanism, psychology and education.
